Techniques

Hand Knotted

Hand knotted rugs are the cream of the rug world. These rugs are produced using ancient techniques, have unlimited design and colour variations and may have investment value in years to come. Hand knotted rugs take time, expertise and skilled hand. The density of the knots in a rug is measured by KPSI (Knots per square inch) number of knots that are packed into an area of 1 sq. inch of a rug. The greater the knots per square inch the better the quality. The cost of a hand knotted rug is generally more than a hand tufted or a flat weave due to their high quality, durability, effort and time which makes their value obvious.

Hand Tufted

Hand tufted rugs are one of the most widely produced category of rugs. These are produced by punching individual yarns through a fabric sheet using a device called a “tufting gun”.

A hand-tufted rug is made partially by hand and partially by a mechanized tool. The process for creating a hand-tufted rug differs greatly from a hand-knotted rug. A hand-tufted rug is made by punching strands of wool into a canvas that is stretched on a frame with the help of a hand-operated tool. This canvas backing has an outline drawn upon it that the artisan fills in. It is different than handknotted rugs where strands are not knotted into the wool.

Hand Loom or Flat weave

A contemporary hand-loomed rug originates from an ancient method of weaving, given a new twist to create different looks. Traditionally, all rugs woven on a hand loom were considered flat weaves. They looked the same on both sides and had no pile and were basically a heavy piece of cloth. The new twist is inserting rods accross the width of a loom while weaving. This serves to pull part of the fiber into a loop above the rest of the rug, giving it pile. The rod can then be pulled out or sliced out of the loops as weaving continues. They are used in places which are prone to tripping. Made on jacquard or thick fabrics and are ready in couple of days. These rugs all have a simple wrap finish around all four edges. If there is fringe it will be clearly added after the fact and not a foundation thread. These rugs are cut along the edges, and sometimes they have glue along the edge to try to help hold them together.

Yarns

Silk

Silk Carpets and rugs are one of the most luxurious productions of their kind made by natural silk which is produced by silkworms. Silk rugs are amazing piece of art for your place. They’re unique in the fact that they have a brilliant sheen as well as vivid colors. The silk fiber also last for longer period of time if they are properly maintained. They are easy to clean and are well suited for both cold places as well as hot weather places. Silk yarn can also be found naturally in the form of bamboo silk, banana silk and tussar silk.

Wool

Wool is one of the widely used yarn in manufacturing rugs. It is a naturally occuring sustainable fiber which is very resilient, warm, soft, absorbs noise, fire resistant, highly durable, anti static, easy to clean and maintain. It generally comes in two category i.e. Indian fine bikanery wool and New Zealand wool where the latter is more soft and wear resistant than the former hence costing more.

Cotton

Bringing a breath of fresh air into a room, cotton rugs provide a room with sleek decor without breaking the budget. Whether it’s by an entryway, in front of the kitchen sink, on a bathroom floor or in the den, the rug provides the home with an abundance of useful opportunities. In fact, they’re so much fun, we introduce new patterns and colours with every season. Cotton rugs are extremely comfortable and offer a great feel and warmth . They are suitable for any area where you can sit on the floor and they are soft on bare foot.
They are available in wide range of colors, due to the way they accept dyes, and are remarkable versatile.
Also they are easy to clean hence can be kept in high traffic areas

Jute

The jute rug is made of fibers from the jute plant, which is found in Asia. This type of fiber is known for being durable, so it’s used in burlap fabric, ropes and rugs of all shapes and sizes. Despite its ability to stand up to years of use, the jute rug is surprisingly soft. In fact, it’s among the plushest of the rugs that are made of natural fibers. For example, the jute rug is softer than the sisal rug, making it perfect for rooms where you’ll be barefoot and able to fully appreciate the wool-like feel of the fibers on your feet.

Inspiration

  • The Pazyryk rug is the first ever know oldest handmade carpets in the world, dated around 5th c. BC, now in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Pazyryk rug was found in 1949 in the grave of a Scythian nobleman in the Bolshoy Ulagan dry valley of the Altai Mountains in Kazakhstan.
  • It measures 183×200 cm and has a knot density of approximately 360,000 knots per square meter, which is higher than most modern carpets.
  • The middle of the carpet consists of a ribbon motif, while in the border there is a procession with elk or deer, and in another border warriors on horses. All parts of the rug are made of wool, including the pile and the base.
  • The Pazyryk carpet was manufactured in Ancient Armenia or Persia around 400 BC. When it was found it had been deeply frozen in a block of ice, which is why it is so well-preserved

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A rug can effortlessly transform any room. Not only can a rug change the look and mood of a room, they also have a range of practical benefits – from warming your home, to reducing noise. It’s a total multi-tasker, capable of enhancing style and hiding imperfections in one chic fell swoop. In fact, it’s our firm belief that everyone should own at least one rug, and we’ll tell you why.
BRIGHTEN A DARK ROOM : In a room with dark walls and furniture, add a large rug that features light colours. This one features cheery orange accents and a simple but eye-catching geometric pattern. Throw a light rug over a dark carpet to help brighten the look and feel of your lounge room. An important benefit of rugs is that they are versatile. You can move them around the room, to different rooms and even take them with you when you move! They are perfect if you love changing your décor frequently, allowing you to mix it up with the season or whenever you like.

CHANGE COLOUR THEME: Rugs are an instant way to create a soft, luxurious surface underfoot. Rugs can do a number of different things to a room. They can divide the room into different areas, create a theme, be re-positioned or removed completely, and be exchanged for other rugs on a whim.

INVITING TO VISITORS: Entryway rugs are a great way to make your visitors and guests feel welcome.

NOISE REDUCTION: A rug will significantly decrease the noise in your space. Not only is a rug quieter to walk on than a hard surface floor, it also absorbs sound from the air. Do you notice that your room has a slight echo? That is because the hard surface floor does not absorb sound in the same way that a rug does. Lay down a rug and listen to the difference.

ALLERGIES: While it may seem counter-intuitive, rugs can have a positive effect on allergens in the home.
For years, those with allergies were advised to remove all carpeting and rugs from the home, on the basis that rugs trap allergens. Numerous recent studies have shown that rugs are beneficial to allergy sufferers because it traps allergens – thereby keeping them out of the air, where they will be breathed in. If you have no rugs in your home and suffer from allergies or other breathing conditions, you may find that a rug will help alleviate some of those problems. Rugs act as the biggest air filter in your home. They improve indoor air quality by trapping dust, pollen, and other particles from the air. Rugs are a better choice than carpet for asthma and allergy sufferers because they can be taken out of the home to be more thoroughly cleaned.

INCREASE SAFETY:Rugs are ideal for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips and falls and minimizing injuries when falls do occur. It provides safety protection for the whole family, but especially for toddlers and older individuals.

COVER IMPERFECTIONS: If it’s your floor that has a problem – like cracked tiles, for example – a quick fix would be to hide it using a rug. Ideally, these rugs go well and blend in with the rest of the furniture in the room. Wall-to-wall carpeting might be there to stay, but rugs are all yours to take with you should you relocate.

TIE A ROOM TOGETHER: Rugs come in virtually every size, colour, pattern and material one could possibly imagine. Which makes it easy to find the rug as the bold focus of your room, or you can use it to unify your colour schemes. It just makes everything make more sense. A rug works as well, if not better, than art or throw pillows to unify your colour schemes.

COMFORT: If you’re not the type to wear slippers when walking around your home at night, you may wish to add rugs to certain parts of your floor so that your feet feel more comfortable, especially with floors that tend to get cold.

ARTWORK FOR YOUR FLOOR: Contemporary rugs look more like paintings than ever before, from squiggles, brushstrokes and wiggly stripes to washes, wild abstracts, doodles, sketches and even prints. There’s no limit to what an artful designer can do.
Rugs are often so beautiful, it’s seriously tempting to hang rugs on the wall and admire them as though they are wall art. It’s genius because you get the impact of upscale art at a fraction of the price. You can also add a rug in a contrasting colour to make your furnishings or wall colour really pop. Rugs add a lot to some rooms design!

CLEANING IS LESS HASSLE:Rugs are easy to clean. The fibres mean that there is no problem vacuuming rugs. Regular vacuuming, once a week, will easily remove dust.

STYLE: Rugs instantly add colour, texture and pattern to a room and create visual interest that reflects your style and personality.

ANCHORS FURNITURE: A living room or family room grouping of furniture can seem to float in a room. Add a rug and you’ll visually anchor the furniture, changing the whole look of the room. A rug makes this same impact beneath a dining room table or strategically placed in a bedroom or reception area or drawing room. A rug changes the focal point of a room and adds a visual divider that makes a space feel more cosy and comfortable..

  • The best carpet depends on your lifestyle. Consider the following:

Do you have a family that spends a lot of time at home?
What are the high traffic areas around your home?
What is the likelihood of staining (from mud, food, etc)?
    Do you have pets?
Do you want to create a certain style?
    What is your budget?

  • Design Pattern: In general, it can be said that no handmade carpet is completely symmetrical. On the one hand, the shape will always be somewhat uneven. On the other hand, the design of one half of the carpet cannot be mirrored exactly. A knotter sits on a carpet for months and cannot repeat small details or ornaments 1:1. However, this is exactly what a machine does. It creates completely symmetrical designs and shapes. If you find irregularities or imperfections, these are signs of a hand-knotted carpet.

Material: In particular, traditional oriental carpets consist purely of natural material such as sheep's wool, cotton, camel hair or pure silk. The surface (the pile) is usually made of sheep's wool, while the back (the warp) is often made of cotton or sheep's wool. Very high quality carpets are made completely from natural silk, which can be recognized by its beautiful sheen. Machine-made carpets can also be made of wool, but often they are at least partly made of synthetic fibres. Especially on the back side, savings are made and cheap material is used. If you find a synthetic reverse side of the carpet, it is an industrially manufactured carpet..

Knot Density: The knot density is used to determine the fineness of a rug. You can imagine the knot density as the resolution of a screen. The more knots a carpet has, the more details and the more beautiful are the elaborations. However, this also requires considerably more effort, skill and time in knotting. Therefore, it also serves to identify particularly high-quality Persian carpets. Here you find all information about measuring and estimating the knot density The knot density can be used to identify a high-quality carpet.

Pile Thickness : In addition to the knot density, the pile height, i.e. the thickness of the carpet, is an indicator of its value. The thinner a hand-knotted carpet, the higher its quality. Only very experienced knotters are able to make a very thin and flat carpet. Very high-quality Persian carpets are usually only 3 - 6 mm thick.

  • Both fibre types have great characteristics, neither fibre type is better than the other. A quality carpet is made with superior materials through our well-monitored manufacturing process using the amalgamation of hands and latest technology. This level of craftsmanship will produce a carpet that offers maximum performance.

  • Contact us, we are just a call away and we can help you to work out which rug size is best for your home.

  • We recommend you use a different vacuum cleaner for different carpet styles. For low cut pile carpets, we suggest a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush that agitates the pile and loosens the soil for easier carpet maintenance. When vacuuming loop pile, cut-loop pile or berber carpet, we recommend that you turn the brush off or change the head to prevent excess fuzzing. For thicker carpets with a higher pile, the height of beaters may be raised and/or suction level reduced to make vacuuming easier.

  • NO! Wool carpet has a natural ability to resist dirt, stains and spills.

  • Lighting can change your perception of carpet colour, making it look like particular areas are lighter or darker than others. The lighting environment between a carpet retail store and your home may also vary, therefore we recommend that you take a sample swatch of carpet and view it in your home for colour before making your final purchasing decision. Also, during use, pressure on carpet pile causes the pile to lie in different directions creating the effect of “shading”. This shading is a characteristic of cut-pile carpets (particularly solid colour). Though on occasions dramatically affecting appearance, it has no detrimental effect on the performance of the carpet.

  • Carpets, like all dyed textiles, will slowly lose colour over time when exposed to direct sunlight, therefore, it should be protected from prolonged periods of direct sunlight. Colour change can also occur when carpet is exposed to ozone, emissions from heating fuels and air conditioners, pesticides, cleaning agents, benzoyl peroxide and other household items. This occurrence, known as ozone damage, is largely unexplained but appears to be more prevalent in coastal areas with a high ultra-violet content.
